Busting Myths about Facial Injections

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse, as well as, the Botox Cosmetic injection. All of these facial injections are used to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and make men and women look younger than they really are. It is important to have all your facts straight before deciding on what type of facial filler you should get and whether or not facial injections are actually what you need! So, we have taken the top 5 myths about facial fillers and provided the truth so that you can easily determine what is best for you!

Myth #1 – Dermal Fillers Will Give You the Same Results as A Facelift
Dermal fillers are used to increase the production of collagen in your face to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. What dermal fillers will NOT do is tighten loose, sagging skin. You will need a facelift to remove and tighten the skin. If you are more concerned with tired-looking eyes and a few laugh lines, then dermal fillers are a great option for you. If you are having trouble with sagging jowls or drooping eyelids, then you will not find the solution in dermal fillers. Most of the time, to get the best effect, plastic surgeons will use a combination of a facelift (or eyelid lift) and dermal fillers to give you the best results.
Myth #2 – Facial Injections Are Painful
Facial injections are considered a “lunch-time” procedure. This basically means that if you have an hour for lunch, you can get in the office, have your injection and be back to work before your hour is up. The pain is minimal, there is no recovery time and you can go back to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. Your esthetician will use a numbing cream on the area where you will be getting the injections and the needle used during the injections is blunt, not sharp, so there is not the stinging pain that you get with traditional needles. You will not have any bruising if the injections are placed correctly and you can return to work without anyone knowing what you have just spent the last hour doing!
Myth #3 – It Is Safe to Get Botox or Dermal Fillers Online
Whew! This is a BIG NO! Botox and dermal fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse, are to be administered by a licensed plastic surgeon or registered nurse.  Not all fillers are made the same and it is important to know where to place certain fillers to get the right look. Without the expertise of someone who understands the aesthetics that are to be achieved using dermal fillers, you end up with a hot mess! This is why it is also not recommended to receive Botox or dermal fillers at doctor’s offices that do not specialize in plastic surgery. Their knowledge of injectable fillers is limited and they do not have the experience in aesthetics that is needed to make you look natural.
Myth #4 – My Face Will Look “Frozen”
You may have heard many horror stories about women and men who have received Botox injections and lost the ability to smile, frown or show any emotion at all. We are not saying these stories are untrue, but we are saying that if Botox is administered by a professional esthetician, the likelihood of getting the ‘frozen” look is minimal. The key to getting a natural look is the amount of Botox used and making sure that the injection is placed in just the right position. If someone is not skilled in judging the proper amount and proper placement of Botox, you do run a risk of complications.
Myth #5 – After I Begin Getting Cosmetic Facial Fillers, I Can Never Stop
Most fillers are temporary and will eventually wear off anywhere between six months and two years. The change during this time is gradual and your appearance will not change drastically. You may begin to notice new lines and dark circles under the eyes, signaling that it is time to get new injections, but that will totally be up to you. You can choose to continue with the injections or you can allow nature to take its course. Either way, you will not suddenly look dramatically older just because your facial filler has diminished.
