Top 8 Facts About Breast Augmentation That You NEED to Know!

If you are considering getting a breast augmentation, getting all the facts before your surgery is imperative. There is so much information available that it is hard to navigate your way through it all! That is why our office is dedicated to continually educating our prospective and returning clients about the procedures we offer, including breast augmentation. We want to help you have an awesome experience where you feel safe and secure during your time with us, so we have prepared a list of the top 8 facts you should know before your breast augmentation surgery:
1.Understand the Terminology:

  • Breast Augmentation is the actual name of the surgical procedure used by plastic surgeons to enhance the breasts.
  • Breast implants are the medical devices placed inside the breast that change the volume, size and shape of the breasts. These implants can be filled with saline or silicone.
  • A Breast Lift is a separate procedure that can be done solo or in combination with a breast augmentation. A breast lift returns the breasts to their normal position on the body.

2.Exercise Will Not Help Sagging, Deflated Breasts
Once your breasts have lost volume and elasticity, the only way to return them to their youthful state is by getting a breast augmentation/breast lift. Breasts are made of fatty tissue and glandular tissue with muscles lying beneath. Although you can do exercises to work the pectoral muscles, this will have no effect on the breast tissue itself. So, while you may gain inches in size around your chest, your actual breasts will remain the same and you will not increase in cup size.
3.Age Does Matter (At least to the FDA!)
The FDA has approved silicone-based breast implants as being safe and effective for women over the age of 22. While it is not a law and you won’t go to jail if you get breast implants before the recommended age, the FDA has set this age limit for good reasons. It is important to discuss the pros and cons of getting breast implants before the age of 22.
4.Breast Implants Require Maintenance
Breast augmentation does require ongoing maintenance, including regular examinations for breast health and to evaluate the condition of your breast implants. Ultimately, you may need to have your implants removed or replaced.
5.You Will Have a Scar; It’s Size Depends on the Implant
If you choose to get a silicone implant, the implant size is determined before surgery. The incision is made large enough for the implant to be inserted into the breast. Saline implants, on the other hand, are inflated to the size you want after the implant has been inserted into the breast. Therefore, saline implants have a smaller incision than silicone.
6.Mother Nature Will Not Be Stopped by a Breast Augmentation
As you age, the natural elasticity of the skin begins to diminish. Life-changing circumstances such as pregnancy, weight loss and aging will affect the way the breasts look and feel. If you get breast implants at age 22, you will still go through these changes and see a difference in your breasts. Replacing your implants and combining a breast lift with your augmentation will help you remedy the problem.
7.You Have a Choice About the Placement of Your Implants
Remember those peck muscles we talked about earlier? Well, they play a specific role in breast augmentation. While they cannot make your breasts bigger with exercise, they are used to gage where the implant should be placed. For women who have a large amount of breast tissue, the implant is usually placed above the pectoral muscles to prevent drooping. If a woman has small breasts or a small frame, the implant is placed below the pectoral muscles to reduce the risk of the implant being seen or felt.
