What Is Breast Lift Surgery?
Breast lift, technically called a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that can lift and improve the shape of a female breast.
In general, a breast lift helps Kansas City patients by raising and firming the breasts. This is done by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift can also reduce the appearance of enlarged areolas.
If you'd like to restore the firmness and shape of your breasts, a breast lift may be right for you. This procedure is highly individualized and should be considered for your own personal reasons, not the desire of others.

Benefits of a Breast Lift
A breast lift can:
- Rejuvenate your physique with a breast profile that is more youthful, uplifted, and firm
- Improve skin elasticity, which may have been lost due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, or gravity
- Improve breast shape and symmetry
- Be performed at the same time as a breast augmentation or mommy makeover, resulting in a comprehensive enhancement
Preparing for a Breast Lift
Our patients begin the breast lift process with a consultation with one of our surgeons. During this consultation, you will be asked many questions to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. You will also discuss your medical history, allergies, and any possible surgical complications.
If you are still considering pregnancy or significant weight loss in the future, it's recommended that you discuss those plans with your surgeon. These types of changes can minimize or reverse the improvement that a breast lift provides. Because a breast lift is a very individualized procedure, the appropriate technique for your surgery will be based on many factors, including breast size and shape, the size and position of your areolas, degree of breast sagging, and skin quality. Your doctor will develop a customized surgical plan to provide you with the best possible results for your body.
During the procedure, incisions are made in 1 of 3 places. Through these incisions, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are also repositioned to a natural-looking, more youthful height.
Your breast lift procedure will be conducted at a licensed surgical center in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Breast Lift: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether I'm a good candidate for breast lift surgery?
To ensure successful healing, we recommend that our breast lift patients be nonsmokers who are in generally good health. Good candidates for a breast lift are women of normal, stable weights whose breasts are fully developed and who do not plan to become pregnant in the future.
A breast lift can be appropriate in younger women as well, most commonly in cases of breast asymmetry where the position of one breast is lower than the other. We also recommend that our patients have positive outlooks and specific, realistic goals in mind for improving their images.
How long will recovery last?
Following the instructions of your doctor is essential to a successful recovery and optimum results. You will need a trusted loved one to drive you to and from the procedure and stay with you throughout the first night.
Dressing or bandages will be applied to your incisions, and an elastic bandage or surgical bra will help minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Discomfort is common following the procedure, and a surgical or support bra is recommended around the clock for the first couple of weeks.
Patient experiences vary after breast lift surgery. Initial wound healing may take 5 to 10 days, at which point you should be ready to resume work and other everyday activities. You may be advised to avoid heavy lifting or vigorous activity. Intimate activity involving the breasts may resume within 4 and 6 weeks.
What are the long-term effects of a breast lift?
The healing process will continue for several weeks as swelling diminishes and incision lines continue to improve. The final result of your breast lift will appear over the next few months as breast shape and position continue to settle. Incision lines do not go away, but they usually fade dramatically over time.
Will my breast lift last forever?
Over time, your breasts will continue to change due to aging and gravity. Your improved breast profile will be best preserved by maintaining your weight, living a healthy lifestyle, and properly supporting your firm, rejuvenated breasts.
