There is a lot of information out there about breast implants, but not so much about mastopexy, commonly referred to as a breast lift. Many women are happy with their breast size, they just are not satisfied with the sagging and drooping that comes with age, weight loss or pregnancy. A breast lift is an enhancement of your natural breasts, bringing them back into the right position, where they are once again perky and full. A breast lift is for women who love the look of their breasts inside their bra but are unhappy once the bra is removed. If you are considering a breast lift, there are a few facts that you need to know that will help you make your decision easier:
Truth 1 – The Pencil Test
Not sure if you need a breast lift? There is a quick test that you can do at home to see if you are a candidate for mastopexy. Here is the step-by-step process for the “pencil test”:
- Stand in front of a full-length mirror and remove your bra.
- Place your pencil horizontally under your breast, in the crease where your bra band normally rests.
- Analyze your nipple, NOT your areola. Is it above, below or even with the pencil?
- If your nipple is above the pencil, you are good. If it is parallel or below the pencil, you are more likely to be a candidate. To be completely sure, schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon who can discuss your options.
Truth 2 – There Will Be Scarring
Just like with any other procedure that requires an incision, there will be some scarring. Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon who has mastered the proper surgical technique used for a breast lift will help reduce the visibility of the scarring. You can also help with the final outcome of your scars by taking good care of yourself during recovery by making sure you follow the instructions given to you by your surgeon after your procedure. Scarring tends to fade over time and the scars can be easily covered with a bra or bathing suit. Your new, youthful breasts will be well worth it!
Truth 3 – It Is Possible to Get Good Results Without Breast Implants
Stand in front of your mirror again, this time with your bra on. Are you satisfied with the look of your breasts? If so, then a breast lift without added implants will be just right for you. Having a lift does not change the size of your breasts. During the procedure, skin is removed but not breast tissue. So afterwards, your breasts remain in your current bra size, with the benefit of having them raised so that they are in the same position with and without the bra! If you are on the fence about whether or not to get the implants with your lift, talk with your plastic surgeon who can give you a better idea about the outcome of your breast lift.
Truth 4 – Workouts May Help But They Will Not Correct Sagging Breasts
One of the biggest questions out there is “do I really need to have surgery to fix my breasts?” Unfortunately, if your breasts are sagging, the answer is yes. While chest exercises such as pushups, bench presses and flyes may help build muscle, they cannot repair the stretched skin that is the cause of the droopy breasts. During a breast lift, the extra skin and tissue are removed and the breast is repositioned. This is not to say that a daily exercise routine is a bad thing. Doing these exercises will help to sculpt and tone the breasts and upper body and help you to maintain the results of your breast lift.
Truth 5 – Babies After a Breast Lift
If you are still thinking about having children after a breast lift, there are a few important things to consider. First of all, breastfeeding should be possible since the milk ducts will not be disturbed or cut during the procedure. Secondly, pregnancy and breastfeeding will change your breasts. Your lift may not last and you will see sagging again after you have finished breastfeeding. With this in mind, it is often recommended that you be completely finished having children before getting a breast lift so your results can last longer.
