Revision Surgery: What Is It and When Should You Get It

Unfortunately, not every person who receives plastic surgery loves their results. Even worse, some people get a botched-up job that leaves them with more problems than they had to begin with. While this is not common, especially if you do your research and choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, it can leave you with a difficult decision to make. Do you accept what you got or find another surgeon who can help you reverse some of the damage that has been done.
Revision surgery is basically any surgery that is performed to correct issues related to a previous surgery. It can help with problems such as breast unevenness, excessive scaring or any cosmetic or functional issue that may arise after your first surgery.
Breast Revision Surgery
There are four types of breast procedures that plastic surgeons perform: breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction and reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. Any of these procedures could possibly lead to a needed revision if not done properly. There is the possibility the results of any of these procedures can lead to unevenness of the breasts or an unnatural look and feel.
With that being said, breast implants have a higher rate of needing revision due to these conditions:

  • Breast Implant Deflation
  • Symmastia (Uniboob or Breadloafing)
  • Capsular Contracture
  • Breast Implant Malposition (implants in the wrong place)
  • Breast Implant Erosion
  • Adjustment of Breast Implant Size

Tummy Tuck Revision Surgery
Abdominoplasty revisions are not as common as the other two surgeries that we talk about in this article. For most people, a revision of a tummy tuck comes from conditions not related to the actual surgery. Gaining and losing weight and getting pregnant can cause the skin to stretch and sag, leading to the need for a revision surgery to remove it. The other reasons for a tummy tuck revision are more related to the surgery itself. A raised scar, abnormal belly button or if the surgeon did not remove enough skin and fat are reasons that patients give if asked why they needed a revision.
Rhinoplasty Revision Surgery
Rhinoplasty is a very sensitive procedure, and you want the results to be exceptional. You can’t cover up your nose like you can your breasts or tummy! (Unless you want a ski mask to become part of your daily wardrobe!) Revision rhinoplasty fixes issues such as a large nasal lump that was not corrected during the previous surgery, too wide of nostrils, or a tip that is droopy or too wide. The revision could also be warranted if you have functional issues, most common being breathing difficulties that need to be addressed for your overall health. Finding someone who has extensive experience in rhinoplasty will greatly enhance your results, whether it is your first surgery or you are in need of a revision.
More Information About Revision Surgery
One important point to consider before revision surgery is this: “Have I given my body enough time to fully recover from surgery?” During the recovery process, your body will change. Swelling will subside, scars will begin to fade and your body will settle into a new “normal.” It can take anywhere from six to twelve months for your body to fully recover and your scars to take on their permanent look. We know that sounds like a really long time when you are unsatisfied with how you look, but being impatient can lead to more complications and you will still end up unhappy.
Second of all, revision surgery is not without its own recovery time, possible complications and cost. You can expect to have close to the same amount of time off from work and physical activities as you had with your first procedure. You will also have to undergo much of the same process as before such as going under anesthesia, having drains, etc.. You will want to check out different surgeons before getting your revision. Cost is important, but remember that skimping on cost can often (but not always) be the reason you need a revision in the first place. Be sure to check credentials and read reviews of the surgeons you are looking at to make sure they are knowledgeable about the revision process.
