Dysport is an injectable treatment for wrinkles containing the FDA-approved Botulinum Toxin Type A. When scientists isolated the botulinum toxin in the 1970s, they thought its paralytic effect might relax eye muscles, and it was approved for treating crossed eyes in 1989. With experiments showing that the botulinum toxin also smoothed out wrinkles around the eyes, Allergan received FDA approval in 2002 for what they branded Botox to treat frown lines between the eyebrows.

Dysport is an injectable treatment for wrinkles formulated slightly differently than Botox to have fewer accessory proteins, resulting in a smaller molecular weight and size that creates a somewhat different effect. Its smaller molecular size allows Dysport to disperse into tissues faster, enabling it to work particularly well for treating larger areas like the forehead. By dispersing well, the molecules can also produce a more natural look that allows for some movement of the muscles instead of complete paralysis.

As with all products containing botulinum toxin, you should not use Dysport if you have specific muscle or nerve conditions, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or any previous surgeries or injuries that might have weakened the muscles and nerve fibers in your face. Dysport is also not recommended for people with allergies or intolerances to milk or lactose, as a lactose-derived ingredient is used in Dysport’s stabilizing solution.
Due to its greater range of dispersion, Dysport should only be used in areas that will not be negatively impacted, so it may not be the ideal treatment for wrinkles very close to the eye, where it may unintentionally cause eyelid drooping.
